Range Rules

Safety is the first priority at the rifle and pistol range of the Indian Creek Izaak Walton League of America. In order to promote safety on the ranges, adjacent areas of our property, and neighboring properties, the following rules are in effect for all users of the ranges. These rules apply to members and any guests brought to the ranges by members.

These rules are for everyone’s safety. They will be reviewed periodically and revised as required to maintain a safe shooting environment. Our property is surrounded by farmland, roads, and houses less than 500 yards from the bullet backstops. Rifle and pistol bullets have maximum ranges greater than one mile. These rules are in part designed to keep all bullets contained safely in the bullet backstops.

Your understanding and cooperation with these rules is essential for safe shooting. If there is anything you do not understand please ask for clarification. If you have suggestions or recommendations for range operations, please contact a member of the Board of Directors.

The pistol and rifle ranges are the only areas designated for rifle and hand gun use. This includes muzzleloaders and shotgun slugs.

The gate combination for 2022 well be sent out after January  1st 2022. This combination will be changed yearly.

Rifle and Handgun Range Rules

RANGE USAGE RULES

* All members and guests that use the rifle and pistol shooting ranges must understand these rules.

* Please use all three RANGE IN USE signs when using the rifle/pistol range. This is for the safety of others who may come into the area.

* No alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs will be allowed on the ranges.

* Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be prohibited from using the range.

* All children (age 17 and under) must be directly supervised by an adult at all times when on the rifle and pistol range.

* Do not leave litter around. Clean up your shooting position before leaving.

* Members must show their IWLA identification card when asked.

* Guests may visit the range twice per calendar year.

* No explosive targets, including Tanerite .

* Do not deface or damage range equipment, shooting benches, chairs, target frames, or any other property. If there is damage to the target backboards, please notify one of the board members. This includes the target posts and pin table legs.

RANGE SAFETY RULES

* Eye and ear protection MUST be worn while using the rifle and pistol ranges. This applies to shooters and non-shooters alike.

* NEVER point a firearm at anyone. Keep the muzzle downrange at all times while at the shooting positions.

* ALL firearms must be unloaded with the breach open while people are downrange.

* NO cross firing. This means shooting at only the targets directly in front of your shooting position. For example, if you are positioned at a rifle range shooting bench, do not shoot at the pin tables

* Do not shoot at any hard, flat surfaces or the surface of water.

* Firearms must be handled and fired safely. Firearms must be unloaded except when on the firing line.

Indian Creek Trap Range Rules

* Eye and ear protection MUST be worn while using the trap range.

* ALWAYS keep your action open on any pump or semi-auto gun. On a double, you should break the gun open as soon as it is picked up off the rack, and not closed until you are ready to shoot. No shot larger than 7 ½ to be used on the trap field.

* All shooters must have a pouch or at least put 5 shells in their pocket so they do not have to bend over and pick up shells between shots on a station.

* All ejected hulls need to stay on the ground until after the squad if finished and guns are put up.

* When going from station to station, the chamber on all guns needs to be EMPTY. This means doubles as well as semi-autos.

* After finishing station number 5, you should turn to your RIGHT, and walk BEHIND the rest of the squad to get to station number one.

* Other rules for obvious reasons are to be aware of your muzzle direction and to only load one shell at a time.

NO HORSEPLAY ON THE LINE, when you have a gun in your hands is not the time for it.
